25 years later

Today marks 25 years after our nation honored a nations hero, marking his birthday as a national holiday to forever be celebrated. For 25 years now, our nation has taken pause on the 3rd Monday of every January to celebrate a man that has inspired people years after his death, and challenged us to be a better people. Now at this 25th day of remembrance, I dare to ask you if you have been the best you, you can be. Have you acknowledge the still ever present racism that exist throughout our country and abroad? Have you acknowledged our country's flawed pass? I ask you these questions not just to draw attention to our harsh realities, but to incite you to do more, for there is yet progress to be made. While its easy to pretend a problem does not exist, the problem will always be there and progressively get worse. A professor of mine once said,

"Ignoring racism is equivalent to ignoring cancer. Though you may delay treatment in fear of accepting that you're sick, the cancer is still there and will progressively get worse unless you deal with it"
If we wish to become a better country, If we truly desire to become a better people, we have to accept our reality, acknowledge it, and move forward.

So today, do something to make our nation better. Do something today to make a difference. To volunteer in your area click here. But don't stop there. While its always nice to have an entire nation acknowledge the legacy of one of our greatest leaders all at once, more justice will be served if we made efforts in our daily life to be more civil to one another, not just the third Monday of each year. Later in the year I want to be able to ask you what you did on May 8th to honor Dr. Kings legacy.
